Update:
I inventoried the drawers in the sewing machine cabinet. I found the lifetime warranty certificate and the original receipt for 7/24/71. MeMa (my grandmother) paid $214.95 in Mesquite, TX. That was the day after my brother's first birthday. I found all of the cams and 10-12 feet with a chart that tells what each foot is used for. I found about 25 spools and a small thread rack. I found a few machine and hand needles and some pins. I found a few buttons, hook fasteners, and a couple of zippers, several dress patterns, thimble, scissors, 4 bobbins, an empty oil squeeze bottle, some, cloth scraps, and the original owner's manual.
I need to get a new bulb and some oil before I try to thread it and test it out.
I also found a 15" by 15" startings of a quilt that Mema started. I may give that to my mom so it will have a better chance of getting finished without getting messed up.

Welcome from Maryland. Sounds like you've found a few treasures. Janome (New Home) makes a very good product . You should really have fun with yours. I doubt the thread is good anymore, but the old spools make cool displays. If I were you I might start with a simple four-patch block to get used to the 1/4" seam allowance that is standard for all quilt patterns. When you find where your needle hits the fabric at 1/4" (don't eyeball, but sew about 12 inches then measure in three places to see how you're doing), then you can put a piece of painter's tape on the needle plate to guide you. Mastering the quarter inch is job one.
Also get friendly with another power tool--the iron. Many newbies don't realize the importance of pressing. A few wrinkles here and there don't seem like a big deal, but they make a big difference in the measurements ultimately, which is probably something I don't need to tell an engineer. Anyway, many of us didn't take iron or the 1/4" seam seriously in the beginning and it showed!
Your mom would probably be invigorated to show you a thing or two about her old hobby. Have fun! Get ready to be addicted.

Zozee - That's the kind of advice I need. I wouldn't have considered ironing, but it makes perfect sense.
Suzanne57 - I know exactly where Rhome is. I almost know Texas and surrounding states without a map. I've worked in 33 states so far.
