    That's my understanding of it. On my Bernina, I normally use the upright pin, but when I'm using some specialty threads, like Sliver or metallics, I've found that they work better when I use the horizontal pin.

    I've never had any problems with any of my machines, whether the spool pin is upright or horizontal, regardless of how the spool is wound.
