That should clean up nicely. It looks like it is one of the earlier ones.
A couple of good pages that talk about the 301 are http://singer301.com/about/default.html and http://singer301.com/dating/default.html
It that was mentioned on the first link that "It's the only combination portable and cabinet model on the market." It also tells of the different styles including the decals on the black machines and describes the other colors as well. The long bed 301 aka 301-2 was the one in the carrying case.
While there is a disclaimer at the top of the page of the second link about it not being completely accurate it is probably a lot closer than 6 years.

The screw to the left of the bobbin is what you use to drop the feed dogs so be sure to give that a good drink of oil as you clean it up.
