I'm working on a quilt right now that is just puckering up terribly as I quilt it. I usually use a walking foot, but mine fell apart, so I using a regular pressing foot. At this point, I'm just going to wash it in very hot water and machine dry it and hope that the puckers blend into the overall quilt.

I've never used a walking foot ever though I do have one for each of my main machines. I use my 1/4" for piecing as well as attaching the binding on at the end. I quilt using a quilting machine though so I'm lucky there.

For machine quilting try leaving the feed dogs up and the pressure on the machine to just one mark below none. If your quilt is basted very close together, the layers won't shift. I glue baste large size quilts and for smaller quilts I use fusible batting.

I always use a walking foot during one or more parts of quilting my quilts. Like someone asked, "What kind of machine do you own?" Sometimes a generic foot is the answer to the expensive problem. I own Berninas so I understand expensive feet. Sometimes they are on an event sale at the shop. Ebay sometimes sells replacement feet for some machines at a lower price than a shop would offer it at. Also, I have heard of some gals sharing an extra part they don't need here on the board.
Again, what kind of machine do you have?

A walking foot came with my Juki 2010Q, but I never use it because it is SO noisy. I can keep layers flat and together by how I place my hands on the fabric while sewing. A walking foot is not necessary, tho some people swear by them.

I gave up on walking foot quilting years ago. I do only free motion now. So much easier once you get the basics down. Yes, it takes some practice before you put it on a “real” quilt, but it is much faster. Plus you don’t have to move the quilt around as much.

I use the generic walking foot for my Bernina 830 because of the price. I'm on my third one. Next time it chunks, I'm gonna invest in the Bernina foot. When I get puckers up top, I switch to a walking foot.
