If you live in a small town, the local news paper's want ads is a good place to start. Once you get a few clients, word of mouth will then keep you going.

try asking local gyn's or clinics if you can leave a flier or card. new moms or moms-to-be can use some help in the beginning. that leads to word of mouth.
if you think your prices are reasonable (check around), show them on your fliers.
price out half- and whole days.

When I was teaching school, other teachers were always looking for dependable cleaning services. Most of them were exhausted young mothers who needed some help with housework during the school year when they didn't have the time or energy to get everything done at home.

Spring is a very busy time for teachers. How about asking to put up a note on the bulletin board in the teacher's lounge at schools in the area.

I am a middle school teacher and I totally agree with you!
My husband has been asking and asking me to hire someone to clean the house. (If you see my pictures of my sewing room... you'll understand why!) I keep up with the general cleaning, but it leaves me very little time to do anything else in the house. In the past, I wanted to hire a cleaning lady, but I think our biggest concern was having a stranger in our home. However, I met another mom at my son's school that has a cleaning business. Since both our kids go to a private Christian school, I feel I can trust her.
I think if you have a teacher friend and they can vouch for you, this is definitely an avenue to pursue.
