I like the soft cuddliness of a washed quilt, particularly for a baby, and, just in case Mom doesn't wash it before she uses it with her little one, you've avoided any chance of baby's delicate skin reacting badl to sizing or chemicals in the fabric.

I agree--send a note that it is pre-washed for the baby--that is what I do!

I'd present it as "seasoned," and "certified" okay for baby to use and Mom to wash. There's also a poem that's nice to give with it:

    IT'S YOUR QUILT

It's okay if you spit on your quilt.
It's okay if your bottle gets spilt.
    If you swallow some air
    And you burp, don't despair,
It's okay if you spit on your quilt.

There are scraps old and new in your quilt,
Put together for you on your quilt.
    If your gums feel numb
    'Cause your teeth haven't come
It's okay if you chew on your quilt.

We expect you to lie on your quilt,
If you hurt you may cry on your quilt.
    On a cold rainy night,
Don't you fret, you're all right,
You'll be snug, warm and dry on your quilt.

My view is it is better to give the quilt washed so any changes in appearance are already there and the intended recipient does not think they "ruined" it or did something wrong after their first washing.
ditto... besides.. a baby quilt will get washed a lot!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. This gift was going to go to the new baby cupboard at our church and I didn't want them to think I was giving a "used" quilt for a new baby. You're suggestions are wonderful and I believe I will include a note with it as was suggested. Thanks again for your help!
