I think it is supposed to be. Sometimes people don't care though, if it's a wall hanging or the back of the quilt will never be seen, and then look for cheaper substitutions.

I know no one wants to hear about WalMart, but some of the stores in larger cities have 108" muslin, even some cream/tan tone on tone that was pretty nice! I like good prices! So, I'm a cheapo! LOL!
Mine is the same quality as the quilt top -- you wouldn't want it to be an inferior cloth -- if your backing goes south, then you'd have to replace and requilt --I don't think you want to do that!

Anyone with quick math skills, I am making a queen sized QAYG with sashings between each block and a long sashing between rows. I am new so still trying to work out the math...12 1/2" unfinished blocks.....How much yardage do you think I'd need for the sashing, and then how many yards of fabric for the backing on each block. I'm not good at math but DH is but to try to describe to him what I want in difficult too. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Can't help with the maths, but here's a link to a quilt calculator for you. You can also get an App for a Smartphone if you have one. Good Luck!Originally Posted by [email protected]
