What do you sit on?

I have a friend who puts an apron around her waist and tapes the bottom of it to her sewing table. Then when she's done she just removes the apron and shakes it out in the bin. But this only works if you have everything you need right in front of you, it's a nuisance if you're getting up and down all the time, unless you have one of those clip-on waistband aprons.

I hunted all over for a chair that was comfortable for me to use when I sewed. I'm 5'3" and the table I use is of standard height but my sewing machine (BabyLock) does not recess into it which makes my sewing surface that much higher. Finally found a chair I LOVE at IKEA. If you're fortunate enough to have one near you you may want to try it out. It is called the JULES chair, it's painted beech (mine is white but if I remember correctly it also comes in black and red and maybe even blue) and it sells for $39.99. It has no arms, swivels, is height adjustable and has a 5-pod base with casters. Have carpeting in the back room so had to buy one of those large plastic mats like they use for under caster chairs in offices but MUCH cheaper from IKEA. Think if you had tile, linoleum or wood floors this would not be a problem. The dimensions are: Seat width 17 1/2" wide (which fits my wide derrier!!!) and it goes as low as 15" tall and as high as 20" high. Works for me. Lots of luck finding something that works for you!

I have an office "typist" type chair whcih has a gas lift and is on wheels. Not the lounge executive type. No side arms.
When I sew I do so in stockinged feet resting my heal on the arm of the base of the chair and the ball of my foot on the pedel. I find it reduces leg stress.
The importnat thing is that you are at the right height. your arms should be relaxed and your elbows at right angles. your shoulders shouldn't be too slouched nor to shrugged up.
I like the gas lift because I can change the height depending on if I am using my machine on top or sunk into the bed of my table.
If I go to a demo and will be free machiening all day I take my office chair with me.

I have an office chair with a high-ish back and arms. I used to use a simple student-type office chair but like the comfort of the 'fancier' one. I also keep a footstool under my sewing table to prop my feet one while I'm doing something other than actual sewing.

Ergonomic office sewing chair. You should also get up every hour and do "Yes-No-Maybe So".
Yes=Stretch head/neck all the way forward and hold it. Then all the way back and hold it.
No=Stretch head neck all the way to the left and hold it. Then repeat on the right and hold it.
Maybe So= Roll the shoulders in both directions.
Then, stretch with arms all the way to the ceiling....hold it.
And, to the floor....hold it.
