i use gingher nippers or a scaple, i have had great luck with both, except the scaple, now it does a wonderful job, i have just got my self, but not the fabric, the one i use has a crescent blade also like MsEithne, then i use curved tweezers to pull out the left over thread, never did think of tape, it will be much easier.

However, you don't have to go through a doctor or veterinarian! Do a Google on "disposable scalpels for sale" and you'll find lots of vendors.
For that matter, you can get them through Amazon as well.
