    Jim,
I have a half dozen machines with the crinkle paint. Singers, Kenmores and a White. Trust me when I say you don't have to rub on them. They are not at all hard to clean. I use cotton balls, a tooth brush and sewing machine oil and they come out just great.

    Vic,
I didn't vote for either machine cos I have no interest in either. Nope, not even the 301. Not a fan of it at all. But, having said that I think you got a smokin deal. Hope you do us a test report when you get it.

I have both machines. If you want to sew on it, rather than just collecting, definitely get the Singer 301A.

my rule of thumb is - bargain and haggle. there's nothing to lose and the worst that could happen is the buyer will say 'NO'. i am always polite when i bargain. i tell them what price i want and will ask them politely what is their lowest price. when i do inquire thru email, 99% will reply with a No or Yes and with their utmost lowest price. i never ever get any bad replies or got ignored. same thing with me if i list something on CL and they reply with a low price i just politely will tell them that their offer is too low. i always answer all buyers email and inquiries. that way i am building a good market environment for myself.

I agree. Being in a business for 38 years when asked for a better price I replied it would be marked lower if I could sell it lower. Once a reputation for bartering is established and prices negotiated how could a person establish any basis. That's what auctions are for.

Looks like the 301 is at a pawn or thrift shop. Maybe there was some sort of a sale or other discount.

you got it. thrift shop. and i was able to bargain and got it for $40. plus tax (nevada) it came up to $43.90. so it really doesn't hurt to bargain. i told my uncle specifically to bargain as they are open to negotiation. instead of paying $50 i was able to haggle and got a $10 discount. yeheyy.

I generally don't haggle at thrift shops, because I figure that the people they are helping could use the money more than me.

Garage sales and Craigslist is another matter, though if I come across a really great deal, I usually pay the asking price.
