I don't trim to square blocks... it ruins some aspect of the design. Instead I alter the seams in the block... either take up or let out as needed. Yes, it's a pain, but at least I don't get puckers from trying to force two different size blocks to seam together. It's worth the time and trouble, IMO.

I gave up squaring blocks. It seemed that I was cutting them into postage stamps as I could never get them all the same size. My motto is now "finished is better perfect".

This would be the reason I use so many pre-cuts, I suppose. However, I now own the Accuquilt GO! (not the electric version -can't afford it), and I am here to declare that it is worth every penny! The die it comes with isn't great (a multi-die: 2 1/2" square, 2 1/2" triangle, and 4 1/2" square. I, however, don't like these combo dies. I have wanted to make a Single Irish Chain lap/throw quilt, and I liked the way the 2 1/2" part of this die cut, but I decided it would take forever to cut the number I needed. So, I bought a die that has 9- 2 1/2" cuts, which means, cutting 4 layers at a time, I was able to cut 36 2/1/2" squares in one motion. EACH AND EVERY ONE WAS CUT PERFECTLY. Sewn into a 9-patch, the block size equals 6 1/2"; I purchased the 6 1/2" die to cut the alternating solid squares, and again, each was perfect. When I sew the top together, everything was exactly right. I now have the 8 1/2" block , the 5 1/2" block (has two on the die), and I plan on buying the 6 1/2" and 8 1/2" triangle dies. You can find these on sale if you watch carefully at a very reasonable price Alas, to admit, he strip cutters really are expensive. I have the 2 1/2 x 24", perfect for a border or binding, and I opted for the 4 1/2 x 24" strip cutter because I already own a 3 1/2" x 24" ruler (not a size I use often). Frankly, I'm just not that good and cutting -and I have good equipment, so the Accuquilt has been a wonderful thing. You might want to give it some thought, given the problems you are having. Just a thought...
