How long have you been quilting and do you have any advice for learning to do feathers. i have only had my longarm for about 3 months ago and have pretty well just doing meandering patterns.

    Hi Nancy,
I have started hand quilting about 20 years ago. I am not sure if I can help you with your question because I am a hand quilter, not a long arm quilter...would you like to know how I quilt feathers by hand?

So, so beautiful. Your stitches are so small and perfect it looks like it was done by machine in the photo.

I see you hand quilted at the very edges! Is that what draws in the borders so you don't have waves? I tried hand quilting once and the borders were kind of wavy so I never tried it again.

Such beautiful work....thanks for sharing. Mary

    Hi Mary,
for the edges I do the "Knife Edge" - it's a traditional English method of closing the edges. All 3 layers are cut to one length after the quilting is finished. I cut to a width of one inch, measured from the last row of quilting stitches. The next step is to shorten the batting a little. Than I fold the backing towards the inside around the batting. The top is also folded to the inside at the same length. The folded edge will be closed with small running stitches.

I hope that makes sense! You don't need a binding for this method, the quilt is quite flat and not very wavy.
