Sometimes, I think you have to be careful not to be conned. A friend who does little sewing was told she needed an expensive repair on her machine and it was better to buy a new machine. She bought the new machine. I took her old machine to my repair man and he serviced it for $40 - it just needed a lint clean out.It is a Pfaff and runs perfectly now.
Then she was told she needed a repair on her new machine - I threaded it correctly for her and it works perfectly. So that means I tend to do the repairs and maintenance that I am capable of and will only take them in if I can't fix them.

I also clean and oil my own. I try to do it about every 6 months or so. Just get the manual out and follow the directions. Works very well. I also use good thread that doesn't shed lint. Makes a big difference. A shop owner told me that.

I work at such a shop and we have standard charges of $69.99 for basic machines, $89.99 for electronic, $129.99 for embroidery machines and our techs are really great.

My local Benina dealer charges a base price of $95 for my machine and emboidary module. The shop also offers a maintenance class so you can clean the machine yourself for $10, think you should look for another place to bring them in. No legitimate business would not give you an upfront base fee. Good Luck

Wow, that price is pretty steep. My service on the Bernina and Viking run about 80.00 each.

I think that is too much, though the computerized machines do cost more for service. I just had service on my Bernina with emb for $90, it was a 180 mile drive but service was done that day. My older Pfaff also computerized was $129 at a different dealer. It was worth the 180 mile drive to dealer as I had already had it to 2 local machine service people who could not find the problem, and one was supposed to be retired dealer who it certified. Next time I have a problem, it will go back to the dealer. I love the machine and it was worth the money and time to get it there. He listened to what I had to say and knew what the problem was right away.
