    i never include batting in my foundation pieced quilts - too heavy. so far i've used muslin for foundation pieces and backing too.

    as wide as i have on hand - i usually try to make a pretty wide one thru the diagonal middle then 1 - 3 on each side. when i made my dd's quilt - i planned it so i cut strips 2", 3", & 4" wide. i purchased coordinating fabrics b/c she is soooo anal that the colors HAVE to match or she wouldn't use it.
