100% Sulky. It's the only thread to use for hand applique'.

I use YLI 100 wt silk in mostly greys and taupes but also have reds and greens. I also have used the bottomline bobboins in various colors the trick to disappearing thread is not the thread! It is the stitch. Very small tiny stitches and exactly in the middle of the fabric fold. Do not pull tight but never leave it loose. Remember tiny tiny stitches! Have fun! Luann

I dont know about machine applique, but I love the 60 wt metlers for hand work. It comes in so many colors that I can match just about anything and it is fine enough to get an invisable blind stitch. I dont use silk for two reasons, I have a hard time keeping it on the needle (and I dont like to make the little knot at the needle, takes time to cut it off) and I dont like the shine of the silk, it shows, even if you are really good at the blind stitch. There are times, like on inside points that you just have to let a little thread show, and the little shiny spot the thread gives off is offensive to me.

Before you all get huffy, I have friends that LOVE silk thread. I have nothing against it for other folks, just not my favorite.

The question was what do each of us like.

Straw needles are just too long for me. I use a number 12 applique needle. It is just as fine as a straw needle, but shorter. I get better control of the shorter needle.

The straw needles are preferred by some as the length gives them more control of the needle.

It is all in what works for you and your hands.

A very fine needle is a must to achieve the invisable blind stitch.

I use straw or long applique needles. I need the length for the arthritic hands. There is more to grip on them. I also use the thread heaven sometimes. I try to keep the thread shorter as well as it knots and shreds less. Remember that needles do dull so use new ones as it gets harder to push thru the fabrics esp. Batiks.
