Quilterparadiseesc.com has a great yardage calculator. You plug in the width and it will give you the yardage necessary. They have several calculators available, one for borders, one for backing, etc. I have found it to be easy and so useful!

I was sewing strips together this afternoon, had prewashed the fabric, and widths are 42, 23, 44. Bought it at Hobby Lobby. Interesting. Don't think I have had so much difference before.

At the quilt shop where I work we have noticed that Benartex is getting shorter on the width of the fabric for sure....don't know about others. When I calculate how much yardage is needed, etc. I use 40 inches as my WOF amount to make sure the customer has enough. Most WOF are 42 inches.

We will need to measure more than ever! I'm not currently buying fabric cause I am ready to drown in fabric. Next time I buy I will check out the width of fabric.

If we buy enough fabric for a pattern that is for 44-45" fabric, we would have to buy more. Price stays the same or goes up, but we have to purchase more fabric to make the quilt. We are getting "it" put to us again.

I always try to think and check the width on the end of the bolt. I'm not surprised they are getting narrower.

Oh do I remember those days!! I have made pillowcases with LQS fabric and (washed) there is as much as a 4" difference between the 3 pieces of fabric I use. I assume I will get no more than 40" from a piece of fabric washed -- and I have fits making pillow cases when I don't 42".
