THX for all your wonderful replies and insight. Just wanted to mention that I had a large lap quilt in mind, not a bed quilt.

This is a very pretty quilt in neutrals..I think young people today like modern too with minimalist style. I offered to make a quilt for my daughter for her wedding and she turned me down.!! I feel for you but think people have particular ideas about these things

Consider that the new bride and groom are setting up house for the first time and they may not have talked about favorite colors that much. Likely everything in their bathroom and bedroom is a neutral color so far. I am thinking they just do not want anything so special to clash with what they might already have. No doubt you could do the beige and gray together effectively, but add a touch of sparkle in a tiny block somewhere. I'd be willing to say you and they would like it.

The problem here isn't the pastels it is the lack of contrast value. Within the stated colors you could make it work by paying close attention to values you place beside one another. This is not easy to do, but you will have a beautiful quilt in the end. Just choose a simple pattern and you should be fine.

Disappointed to learn this for 2 reasons: although this would be THEIR quilt, I actually dislike pastels (LOVE COLOR), own none in my stash for that reason, never wear them, cannot imagine working with them for even one hour. Secondly, with the blandness I have no idea how to have contrast even by adding white, showcase any pattern or produce an attractive result. It all just seems BLAH to me. I would not use black to make the pastels pop either, defeats the whole purpose. So, am rethinking the whole idea. Any input? THX
Take come coloring pencils or use a program on the computer to design simple quilt pattern. Pick one of the pastels (I'd use a soft forest green) for your main color and play off that. You might be surprised how much you like it.

Perhaps something like this could work for you...the colors are brighter than neutral, but still in that neutral family. They aren't loud, but classically pretty (IMO) I think there may be more options to "push the envelope" with an antique white or butter yellow background in the florals department Good luck!

Pardon this commercial suggestion; just looking at the colors with this one
Now there's a great way to use the pastels. Use prints that have the neutral backgrounds. A bit of darker color won't really throw your pallet off.

By no means does this have to be a baby quilt, but what about something like this? I a making this pattern now, with dark chocolate brown instead of white since my dogs paws would just stain it. http://www.freshlypieced.com/2010/10...quilt.html?m=1
