We no longer have any local LQS's. Fortunately, we have a couple of options -- one starts at $3.50 a yard up to $9.99 a yard. They frequently move the more expensive fabric to the flat-fold table ($3.50) to make room for newer fabric. The other one has fabric starting at $4.95 a yard up to Batiks which are slightly higher. Also, our local WalMart has gotten in Waverly fabric for $3.97 a yard and a few other different fabrics. I have noticed different qualities of fabrics available and the shelves are full and they are offering more remnants more recently and the department is more frequently manned.

I have a variety of places where I purchase fabric. One of our local quilt shops has an area marked "1/2 price" and I always find something there. I used to work at a thrift store and bought lots of fabric for very little. I remember buying about 6 yards of a lovely clam shell pattern fabric for $1.00. I've also cut dresses, shirts, etc. But then again, I have paid $13.00 a yard (although I don't do it often). I'm a fabric-holic.

Schoolteacher, I know it's a shame but I, along with a lot of quilters cannnot afford the LQS prices, I shop at http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/index.cfm a lot and find great prices on their end pieces in the FQ section.

In southern Ontario, Len's Mill Store is worth a look. They carry probably hundreds and hundreds of bolts of fabric, but you need to know your manufacturers because much of it is poor quality. Their prices are good ~when on sale or with a coupon~ but otherwise name brand fabrics run about the same cost as at local quilt shops.

Most LQS cost that much..some a little..or some more..but..there are places like Hobby Lobby and wal- mart..who have cheaper fabric..i have a quilt ..one of my first that is maybe 27 years..age of my granddaughter..it all came from Wal-Mart it is used every day on my bed..it is still in great shape..not all cheaper material is bad..just pick and choose I have found the same fabric in LQS and these places for far less...as for the bright colors..that is the store owners doing..just go to a different place..I have to drive out of town for all my fabric..so have to pick a place to go..u will soon find what store stocks what u want and can afford..myself..I use all kinds depending on the quilt to be made..my wedding quilts are all queen or king..they cost 200 to 300 but they are a one time thing..I always give my quilts away pretty much..so I am very sure they will be care for..before they go out the door..if not ..no quilt..so it all depends on u..what u spend in the long run..

I don't know But their prices, quality and service are the best. If I don't want to spend £50 to get free postage I join up with a quilting pal just to save a few extra pennies, have you looked at their £2.20 selection of Indonesian batiks! WOW and their panels selection is great at fab prices too.

I think its totally possible to find great quality fabric on line for under $5 per yard. Is it newly released? No but it doesn't matter to me. If your determined, there are a lot of different ways to bring the cost of quilting down to a manageable price without sacrificing quality. I actually enjoy the process of shopping for bargains.

I don't think its necessary for cotton quilt fabric to cost so much! I've gotten to the point of using my stash fabrics and buying fabrics a Hobby Lobby or JoAnn's(only with a coupon). I cannot afford to buy from the LQS very often. Yesterday I bought 3.5 yards of fabric, it was nearly $40!
