I tend to avoid 'corporate food'. My favorite place is 'New China Buffet in Corvallis Oregon. Good fresh foods, no cornstarch, no MSG, lots of veggies! My second favorite is 'Emmons Meats' also in Corvallis. They have fresh Buffalo Burgers, Mmmmmmmmmmm!

I have always like to find 'mom and pop' restaurants to try. Years ago, My sister and I were just moving to Columbus, TX, and had been unpacking all day. Neither of us wanted to cook so we went out to eat. We walked into this pretty little restaurant and were seated. As we looked at the menus, we decided to have a chili burger. We were in Texas after all, the home of the worlds best chili cooks. When I asked the waitress if they had chili burgers,(since it wasn't listed on the menu, but burgers and bowls of chili were.) She smiled sweetly and said" why yes dear we do". Great! We each ordered one. When she brought it to us, it looked like a burger and fries. I asked about our chili burgers. The waitress said "Why it's right there darlin'". "If you lift the bun, you will see the chili". We looked, and sure enough, there was chili sauce smeared on the top bun! We looked at each other, and 'lost it'. We started laughing so hard, my sister made a 'snort' sound" and we laughed all the harder. There we were, in the chili capital of the world, and they had never seen a real chili burger, we had to tell them what a chili burger was! To this day, I can make her laugh by just suggesting we "go find us a chili burger"!

on the beach or on the road! I carry a pocket knife, salt, pepper, and paper towels in the car at all times, cus you never know. If we go on a road trip or to the beach I pack a basket with iced tea and some cut carrot/celery sticks, we stop at a Publics or any grocery that I know we'll find great fresh things in; we pick up fresh Cuban bread, assorted deli olives in oil (to dip the bread), an imported cheese (I like semi softs), a stick meat - anything like a salami etc, sometimes sushi. We always get 2 cheese bearclaws for the ride home.
get it all to the car, transfer to the basket and eat on the drive, or find a picnic spot, or drive right to the beach and eat near the water! sharet
