I have a Janome 4900 and find that I can move the needle a few "clicks" to either right or left and still be able to use the single hole needle plate. Be sure to try it out by slowly moving the hand wheel to determine how much you can move the needle without hitting the edge of the hole.

I bought one for my Viking and ended up returning it. As someone else said - a 'very generous' 1/4". I thought it would help me keep a straighter seam at the beginning and end but no such luck. My machine has a 'scant' 1/4" setting with a standard foot and that works a charm for me. For the other machines I have and/or had - the metal 1/4" foot without the flange worked just fine as well. Guess it's all what you get used to.

You don't say what it is you don't like about it... I use mine a lot, bumped over into the 4.somethings usually. Some ppl have asked why they can't make a scant 1/4" foot - scant varies depending on the thickness of fabric, thread, even how you press the seam, so I do a test seam and adjust accordingly but then I'm very pernickety!
I use my Acufeed 1/4" for piecing long strips and sewing on borders because it really helps avoid those bendy seams. I find around 6.5 needle position works here. I made a bargello with it, did not bother sewing the strips alternate directions and they were straight as an arrow. Having said that, the guide does annoy me if I'm joining OBW blocks for example where you need to keep the little triangle ears to line up the junctions... But on the whole, I love my Janome AND it's feet and I don't find them at all 'plasticky' as someone said - apart from the parts that are see through so must be plastic, they are all metal and very solid. :-D
