You can adjust the tension of the thread by turning the white knob. You can unscrew the thing, and have plenty of room to put in a small heavy blob of metal (I found in DH's shop) It doesn't wobble or tip anywhere now. I put a plastic straw over the spindle to make it longer so my spool doesn't dance off. The little fine tuning made it must have item for me. My grand winds dozens of bobbins, I'll never be bobbin poor. :D

:-) Yeah! love it, don't have to play with the sewing machine if the bobbin I am using runs out. It did take me about an hour to get it working right the first time. Per previous posts, you can adjust the tension and also manually stop (very easy) if it tends to overfill your bobbin. The instructions are not useful; had to figure how to adjust etc. myself.
    I have a Bern ina Activa 220.

This was my question of the day, thanks for the answers that are already here. I will just wind a bunch and keep them...in labeled pill bottles, brilliant idea! Thanks again.

I'm afraid I'm a naysayer. I tried twice and returned each of them. Several problems came up and I just decided it wasn't worth the trouble and expense. 8-)

My machine has a winder on the side so if I can get myself organized before I start, there is no need to have the portable one, I have been looking and wondering though. I like the ideas and different points of view on this board. Everyone is so helpful.

I have one and I love it! I didn't like the way my machine was overfilling the bobins and now I don't have that issue

I am a yea! I love it. I love that I don't have to stop what I am doing to load a bobbin or guess ahead of time how many to prepare.

I say Nay. I have a Viking, and you can wind new bobbins as needed, even when your project is under the needle. I do wind extra bobbins before starting, and I do like the idea of using pill bottles to store the extras.

No from me. I always wind at least 5 bobbins before starting a project. Hate to have to stop sewing just to wind a B. Could see it would be useful if your bobbin winder didn't work.
