I don't think it is ugly at all. It is busy. You could consider the way you would quilt this. Anything you quilt around will pop, anything quilt down will recede. You could plan what pieces to treat which way and your quilt will look very different than it does now. Again, this quilt is not ugly!

I vote no sashing. Once this quilt is together...and a border added...you will be amazed at how good it looks.

I once did a swap on Prodigy bulletin board (yep..way back)...and we swapped ugly fabrics...and then had to make a quilt & send pics to each person in the swap (hey, couldn't upload pics back then)... I loved that quilt! It had some of the ugliest fabrics in it...and when together...beautiful. I did a tumbling blocks pattern. My best friend got that quilt.

I vote for a darker colored, basically solid sashing with corner blocks of your scrappy fabrics. The corner blocks of similar scraps will help pull those tulips in the corners together to form your secondary pattern and the darker sashing strips will help calm the busyness and frame the blocks. A print border or two around the outside will continue on with the scrappy look. You have a very neat quilt in the making. It's a piece of art emerging, just keep helping it along. It will tell you what to do. Please post pics when you are done. I want to see what you came up with!

I've made this pattern several times, both with and without sashing. I agree that without sashing adds a really nice secondary design. I did it in all beiges and browns for that one. The truly scrappy one I did was with sashing and added a gold sashing. But if you want to bring out a certain color in the quilt, use that one for the sashing - and make it at least a 2 1/2 inch wide sashing to show up. Since most of the fabrics in the blocks are prints, use a plain or tone on tone to bring out the prints in the blocks. It's a fun pattern to try out in one colorway as well. Good luck

I agree and for me, there is no such thing as an ugly quilt. Some child is going to go bonkers for this one, sashing or not. Personally? Since they are now proving that youngsters love bright colors, I'd go with the advice of a bright red or blue sashing, making those squares a focal point if that is what you want to do. I think it would be GREAT!!

Love your quilt. You might sashing that brings out a color to bring it together, but anyone who receives this will love it.

I also like scrappy...and this should be fine. When finished, I would surround it with a dark blue border.
