Cardinal sin? Did you have fun? Does it look good to you? Do you like the results? Will you do it again? If you answered yes to these there was no sin . LOL ha-ha

I don't think sewing on the side borders first actually "saves" fabric because the area is the same (sq inches). But, putting the border on the longer edges first (whether they be sides or top/bottom) makes better use of the fabic. Like others have said, if you put the border on the shorter edges first, the fabric needed to border the longer edges has to be longer by the with of the two borders already in place. Of course, if your quilt top is square it doesn't make any difference. I have done the math, matraina!

It really looks better to do the sides first and then the top and bottom, but there isn't any rule and if you like the look don't worry about it.

This was what I was told was the reason as well.

Quilt rules are made by the quilt police, and we all know what we all think of the quilt police! Your quilt, your way!

Is there a special reason to put borders on in this order? I really don't want to rip!
The reason to put the sides on first is to save fabric making the longer borders. If your borders are 8 inches and your quilt will be 80 x 100, then your side border strips would be 84" long and your top and bottom border strips would be 80" long. Doing it the other way (top and bottom first) your top/bottom borders would be 64" long and your side borders would be 100" long.

Doing the sides first would allow you to use 2 WOF strips on all four sides.

If I miter the corners, I can out-smart the quilt police.

Are there rules to quilting? If so I have broken all and am still allowed to make quilts to my rules.

I put on the side borders first because it takes a little less fabric that way.

I think you can do whatever you want. ITs your quilt! I think it would be neat to do the borders like a log cabin and start at the top, go to the side, the bottom and finish on the other side. Who's to say what you have to do and in what order????
