100% cotton sheets...200 threads per square inch cotton percale

was looking at cotton sheets in Sears.....since a lot of you use them for backing...thought i`d give it a try.....but know nothing about thread count..my question.....what do you think ....for $27.95 brand new???? But the thread count puzzles me...what is 200 per square inch...want something that will be easy to quilt....

200 thread count means per square inch. Not the best to be sure, but much easier to had quilt through. Really soft sheets are about 6-800 per square inch, but that would be pretty hard to quilt through. I am not an expert, just thinking about density.

I hate to plug Walmart, but their sheets are a lot less, they are 200 ct and 100% cotton, perfect!
I use these on my give away quilts instead of paying $30 to 50 for a backing. I had a customer spend $81 on a flannel backing, that is a lot of money.

For comparison: Regular quilting cotton averages 68-75 square, pima cotton (hand dyes usually and some batiks) is about 133 x 72, batiks are in the 200-300 range.
Remember that some sheet manufacturers count the fibers in the threads, not the threads. So, if there are three fibers twisted to make each thread, they call it a 600 thread count when it's really 200. It's not really apples and apples to compare thread count in sheets to commercial fabrics unless you consider that aspect of it.

yes, but can`t find 100 % cotton sheets at Walmart here...only poly blends

not here in Canada...i`ve looked at Walmart for 100 % cotton sheets but thy don`t have them..and fabric here is twice the price that in the States
$27.95 per sheet, that is crazy too much..... 200 tc is not good at all and will wear thin in no time. you can buy 400 tc at walmart for less than $10.00

I`m looking for something that would cost me less than the backing fabric which can be quite expensive here...but I do want quality...not cotton that will wear out after a few washes...

Yes, I was thinking the same. they are no longer 100% cotton and also they are no longer as cheap. Some one mentioned IKEA. for me that is a long drive but if I ever go there I might look. I usually find something for $4-6 fabric a yard for backs.
