I was quoted a price of $2800 for a 440 QE machine that has been used for a few hours during a class. Doesn't include embroidery module, has BSR, walking foot, all the other standard inclusions. What do you think?

Can you check out pricing at patternreview.com? Also, call distant dealers and see if they can beat the price. You want to buy locally, but information is power.

Will all the warranty still apply? Do you have a good dealer in your area if you have problems and to take classes from? That is a fair price if only slightly used. I payed about $3000 for mine this year and it was slightly used too. The 440 and 430 are being replaced with the 550?

I was quoted a price in Abita Springs, LA for 2500.00 new in the box.

I know this past summer the price on those got reduced to $2200 for a new machine and $1995 for the class used machines at our LQS. I'd check on the warranty too that is a big thing you don't want to be without when I purchased the 550QE from my LQS it had only been used for demo by our Bernina Rep on site. So I didn't mind getting it because I knew none of the students (I know I'm hard on some machines in class because I don't know exactly what I was doing at the time) and I've got the full warranty on mine.
I'd also find out if they have the Bernina Academy for newly purchased machines we're doing lessons once a month on all the different foot pedals, stitches etc and each month we create new projects each month for 10 months.

Sounds high to me too. I saw one on Craig's list for $1,000. It was sold before I could even call the lady.

I bought mine from a dealer as a demo model, and that was close to the price I paid (I paid a bit more because I'm in Canada.) You want to make sure that the warranty's intact, and I'd make really sure it had been serviced between its use and your possession of it - mine has feeding issues that I have yet to have corrected, because the original dealer refuses to admit that there's something wrong, and I haven't had the cash to have it serviced elsewhere. Other than that one thing, it came as new and it's a perfectly functioning machine in every way. (I think it's a timing issue that I'm having trouble with. I hope it's just that

From what you're describing, it was the same situation - my machine was used in a classroom at the big Toronto Sewing expo (CreativFestival). It was a very good deal, just make sure you can't get a better one from a dealer in the area, as these machines are being discontinued in favour of the 500 series. (550 is the new quilter's edition.)
