Default fixing a old family quilt

I was asked to fix this quilt it has appliqued butterflies the wings look good but the body has to be replaced there are 47 what I was thinking about doing is steam and sew 2 and not do any sewing on the body. what is your opinion should I sew them also?? I would do just raw seam applique. Please help

If the butterfly wings are hand appliquéd down, I would do the bodies in the same method. I might however prepare the bodies by stitching the fabric (right side down) on a used dryer sheet. I would cut a small slit in the dryer sheet to turn them right side out and press. The appliqué bodies would then be fairly easy to hand stitch in place.

Can you post a picture? I agree with Tartan, in that I would probably try to keep the applique methods consistent. If this is a quilt (with batting and backing) then I'm not sure that it would be possible to apply a fusible, or do machine applique. Hand applique might also be difficult however, so I'm wondering if there are other options, like hand tying the bodies on. It would really help to see the quilt.

    I think Tartan's idea is a winner.
