After the last two projects, where I ended up not liking my colour choices, I find myself really hesitant to pick colours for this next one.

I used to be "Hey ho, away we go", (And have some decent quilts to show for it), but now I second and third guess myself and ended up putting everything away at the shop last night.

I've picked out a main fabric that I like that has a soft yellow base colour and a number of gender-neutral baby-type colours in it, and 2 plain co-ordinating fabrics, but I need 7 more....

Would you mainly stick with variations of the co-ordinating fabrics with a few of the "extra" colours or would you add in more of the "extra" colours and use less of the co-ordinating fabric colours?

This is the quilt I'm going to do...it's actually from a post here from 2013! If anyone knows the pattern or the designer I'd love to give kudos.

That's an adorable quilt!

also have come to question my ability to pick fabrics lately! LOL!!! I have come to buy 1/8 or 1/4 yd of the fabrics and make a sample block to make sure i like my vision. I just have to make sure i can get back to the store quick enough before it's all gone.

of course, that doesn't work if you only order online or can't get to the store easily.

If you care to share photos of those last two projects, it might prompt some ideas on how to improve your color choices. That really is a cute quilt!

If you post the first two, we can tell what it is that seems off. I know as a new quilter when I was starting out, I kept choosing colors of the same intensity. Once I started adding contrast, my quilts improved. I also tried several times to make charm packs and layer cakes just using the fabrics included. I liked them so much better when I added a solid neutral to ease the eye on all those prints.

I wonder if looking at pictures online would help. Look up the pattern you are considering and see what others have done with it.

whenever i find a pattern I like U buy fabrics usually from the same line so the are coordinated. I usually make my own kits so I don't really have a stash I havee to search through

Thanks, QulitnNan...seeing other people's take on it makes me realize that I kind of like it kept mainly to one or two colours, rather than trying to match all the colours.

Watson, I can totally relate! Luckily I have a daughter that has a great eye for color coordination. My last quilt I ended up buying so much fabric that even when I got the right pieces picked out I had my DD help me with the layout. Sometimes it is just a matter of placing the different fabrics together. Sometimes I think a lot of my stash is because I change my mind after buying fabric.

I envy people that can put together all the fabrics in the bargello quilts.
