Does anyone have any ideas on fussy cutting a 2.5inch x 84inch strip? Any reply would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

why does it need to be fussy cut. it's 2" that will be seen, i think we need more info on why it needs to be fussy cut.

Not sure what you mean by ( fussy cutting) a strip 84" long? Are you isolating a specific design that runs the length of a fabric? If so I would probably first fold carefully the fabric into a manageable length and ( rough cut) a strip about 3-3 1/2" wide isolating the design. Then I would open the fabric and cut the strip as a single layer making sure it is lined up properly and cut it to the width I need.

Hi lynnie, Thanks for your reply. It needsto be fussy cut because its a border print thats being used as a border on a reproduction 19th century border quilt

When I cut a border print, I usually cut it along the straight grain (along the selvage edge) of the yardage. Using a short ruler like my 6" x 12" I carefully slide it along the design, cutting as I go. It takes longer than folding the fabric, but assures a straighter-on-design strip. I place a pin at the 84" mark to know where to stop.

If I have to cut on the cross grain (from selvage to selvage), I still cut one layer at a time as above. When I join the strips to create the length I need, I try to match the design -- you often lose a bit of fabric here -- by drawing a line across the design on the strips I have to join so that the pattern matches when I sew.

I've done like Lynnie and Jan. But be sure to straighten your fabric first so that your cuts are on the lenght of grain and straight--otherwise when you get ready to quilt it, there may be problems.

I use a 6ft straight edge that is 2 1/2 inch wide bought at Lowes. I mark the strip down each side and then cut the strip. This straight edge is wonderful for marking straight lines for quilting. I have the 4 and 6 ft one. $8 and $12. Bright yellow metal exactly 2 1/2 " wide.

Not sure what a hardware store is called in the UK but it is where tools (man store) are sold. Personally it is my favorite place to shop. Yes, a metal straight edge is an awesome tool to have for quilting!!. Here's a picture of one, so you know what to look for because it probably has a different name in the UK.
