Default Back in the day...

- I remember when my gang was at the crawling and toddling stage, how I would sit them down in their highchairs and clothespin a flannelette diaper around their necks when I was without a proper bib.

- Baby cribs had drop-side railings for ease of lifting baby/toddler in and out, and being able to lower the railing made dressing and changing baby a breeze.

- Bottles were glass, though I used plastic once my kids were up and mobile.

- Homemade baby food and formula was all in a day's work for me.

- No Pampers for my kids, I used cloth diapers, pins, and rubber pants. Home-laundered in the washing machine and hung to dry on the clothesline.

- A good old-fashioned proper spanking went a long ways.

- When a new baby needed a bath, it was done in the kitchen in the sink.

- Johnson's Baby Powder was a staple in every home with babies.

- Pedal cars were all the rave!

- Lawn Darts were a play thing!

- Babysitting for .25˘ and .50˘ an hour!

Oh man! And now??? NOTHING is safe and none of those items are allowed. We are raising a bunch of ninnies!! Or as a young friend once said: a bunch of sissy la la’s!

My only difference was breastfeeding and i used some Pampers!! Now my baby is 45 so i hope they have started to decompose!!

the world is a different place…..

I remember back in the day. I wouldn't go back to those days for love nor money.

I didn't deal with bottles as I breastfed. I also didn't hit my kids. We still play with the lawn darts as adults.

Most of those things are in my "been there, done that" category.

I am way more interested in my current needs and activities.

Some of my current opinions:

We are over sanitized
Breast feeding is a good thing
Keeping your baby dry is a good thing
Car seats are a good thing if properly installed and used

Amazing that so many of our kids and us survived to adulthood

Lawn Darts were a favourite of ours, too!

I breastfed my first two (part-time), then moved to the bottle fulltime with the younger ones.

Love the "been there - done that" saying! I use it occasionally myself.

I agree about our world and society today being over santitized.

Another to add to the list of back in the day things...

- Riding in the backs of pickup trucks.

- Playing freely where every neighbours yard was our playground, and come summertime, being outside until the street lights came on.

I breast fed one, bottle for the other. Both grew up healthy. Disposables diapers for me as they were available and easier.
The only sanitizer they had as kids was Dial soap. They started soft table foods at six months along with baby food. My thinking was keep child raising easy as possible. That meant yeah some nights they went to bed needing a bath or wore mismatched clothes. Back them mismatched socks was a shock to moms. LOL

As the oldest of 4 children, I remember standing up in the front seat next to my mom when she was driving, then the others did too when they learned to stand. (Hope that makes sense). Never used a seatbelt. And Mom used to send us out to the front yard to play while she did the housework. I got my share of spankings too, but we all grew up being pretty well-behaved.

We never had any children, so all I have to go on is memories of my childhood.
