Default Brother Machine only going backwards

I have a smaller Brother XR3140 machine that I use mostly for adding sashings, borders and binding at the end of my large cutting table. I decided to use it yesterday just for this on the quilt I've been working on. For whatever reason, it will only go backwards. It has a "back" button and that works just find one stitch at a time if you just press it like it should but when I click on the "stitch" button I get an error 5. Went to the booklet to see what that error means and it only talks about error6. I decided to go ahead and clean out under the bobbin area and yes, it was loaded with fluff so I guess it was time to clean it out anyway. Put everything back correctly, turned it back on and tried it again on a scrap and still will only go backwards. Any ideas what may be causing this as it worked just fine that last time I used it. My next step will be to take it to a guy in town that works on machines but thought I'd throw this problem out to you gals as you're so knowledgeable. When I told my neighbor about this issue, she just laughed but I guess it is sort of funny.

I can't offer any advice about your machine, but, before you put in a lot of dollars for service, consider a newer basic Brother. I am thinking it would be about the same price as service. Unless your repair guy is very reasonable!

You might check out this short video - it could be something similar.

Google is your friend. There were several remedies for the Error 5 on Brother XR3140. Here's one you might try.

It says the same thing for the XR3140 as the link cashs_mom gave - https://support.brother.com/g/b/faqe...qh00000066_000

Happened to me a few years ago, but that was the last thing it did. It turned out the computer chip was fried. So, if that model is computerized, and the chip is both available and easily replaced by you. That might solve the problem.

This is a basic Brother machine that I bought online from Costco no less back 5-6 years ago. Doesn't get used much but someone on this site gave me a youtube video to watch that showed getting inside the machine so I'm going to try that today.
