I've been quilting for 40 years but am just now getting around to learning quilt as you go. I've been researching various methods for the last few weeks. Right now I'm leaning toward Karen Brown's. What's your favorite?

I have an older book by Marti Michell called "Quilting in Sections" which I like a lot. I often make a larger quilt in strips that I quilt and then put all the strips together. That's what I'm doing with Dear Jane.

I have made a few QAYG. This is the video that I have bookmarked. There are other selections on YT once you visit the site. Good sewing on your adventure.

Great thread! The minute I read the QAYG tutorial put together by our very own SewBizGirl I knew I'd be using it. She did a fabulous job of simplifying instructions and posting pictures.

If you plan to use wider sashing (as I will with Aby Dolinger's BOM quilt "Optimism"), I plan to follow her QAYG with wide sashing tutorial.

I get so overwhelmed when I look at all the techniques and suggestions on YT and FB. I hope others post their favorite techniques on your thread.

Actually, I've made 2 QAYGs. The first one used same black fabric as quilt. Each block was quilted with different patterns--super fun.
The wall hanging was the second attempt. I used gold metallic thread to quilt each block, which made it pop. You can't really see in the pic.
I had forgotten how fun these projects were to make. Thanks for reminding me!

I've been doing QAYG for many years and have used a lot of different methods. I like sashing, but I also like a quilt without sashing.

I'm using this method now, based on this video that I saw - Halo Inspirations It is QAYG without sashing. I needed to revise it a little for the end blocks around the edge of the quilt as I'm keeping the batting to the edge on the block edges (sides) that will have binding on them, so my binding will be full with the batting. Basically you cut the binding the same size as the finished block -- you can skip part of the video that shows you how she fixes a mistake she once made, but other wise since I'm used to doing QAYG it was easy for me to improvise. I think this one is going to be my favorite for when I do QAYG without sashing.

I recently tried a different on before I found this (one above), but it ended up being too bulky and still has sashing on either the front or the back.

I also have done Carolyn Forsters QAYG with no sashing -- it is a very short video so I got her book to get the entire instructions The book is:
Quilt As You Go: A practical guide to 14 inspiring techniques & projects I think this one was a little time consuming and you have to be really careful not to accidently cut the quilt front when you are trimming batting and the like.

This is why I like the one on Halo Inspirations better. You trim the batting to the correct size to begin with. I also left the backing a bit bigger than she did on the Halo site, so that it wasn't such a small foldover.
