Hello everyone,
I’m looking into learning collage quilting and wondering who has recommendations for online classes, etc. I have looked into Susan Carlson Master Class online. Anyone done that one? And I’ve watched collagequilter.com. some on YouTube. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I haven’t done an online class. But I did take a class from a Laura Heine certified instructor. I was not overly impressed with that style. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of Steam A Seam. There, I wrote that out loud! I know many who swear by it. I’ve made several collage quilts before the LH class and a few since. Like you I’ve watched several videos on each persons style and technique. Then I made my own style combining bits and pieces from them. I would make a suggestion to try a small, say 8” x 10”, simple vase with flowers and play with different methods and see which you like. Or if you have the funds take a class from a couple and see what you like. Just my two cents worth.

Agree with Lena to try something small and fairly easy to see if you like the technique.
Then check local quilt stores to see if any are offering classes. I’ve done some of Laura Heinz patterns but don’t like the busy backgrounds so usually simplify them. Did this simple vase with flowers, then moved on to bigger things.

I took an in person class with Laura Heine. She does an interesting technique and I was very glad I took the class. There are many different approaches to collage quilting. Some of it depends on what you are making with the collage. Wall hangings are very different than quilts that are going to be used. I'd look for an in person class in your area. With collage quilting there's a lot to be said for having an in person teacher who can advise you on your particular problems.

I saw the Collage Quilter at the Houston Show in 2024. She has a nice technique and some lovely fabric bundles that coordinate with some of her patterns. She demonstrated her technique at the Show. Of course I bought a fabric bundle that I haven't done a thing with yet.

I took a class with a certified instructor. The process is not difficult or detailed. I would think a YT video would provide enough instruction. I do love Susan Carlson's work. That is very detailed! After taking the class, I experimented with a few ideas. The "A" is done on the pink fabric.

I have Susan Carlson's Masterclass which is invaluable for many technique and colour/value lessons. I don't use her glueing technique, usually though...I prefer Steam a Seam Lite 2. Her technique certainly has its place, I just prefer to fuse.

I like the Collage Quilter as well. I bought a kit and have just watched a few videos and then sat down to give it a try. I've made a lady bug and a rooster. Usually I would work on these a bit and then leave them alone for a few days and then come back and see if I still liked the fabric placement.

Of course, those were pretty small projects. I've also started two Laura Heine patterns - a Santa Claus and one with pigs. These larger ones are a bit harder for me for some reason. So I suggest start small.
