My grandmother taught me to quilt when I was a child. She would sit on her front porch swing in Anniston, Al every summer piecing quilts by hand and singing church hymns. I have a Lone Star that she pieced. Just the Star itself. It was one of her last ones before she died and was not pieced very well but I would love to finish it.

I have never made a LoneStar quilt. do I applique the star on to a backing or do I continue piecing it?

I'll be interested in seeing answers to this, as well. I, too, have a Long Star (just the star, but in a couple of pieces) that my grandmother was working on many years ago. I was thinking of just sewing the pieces together and appliqueing on a piece of fabric. Will wait to see what others may suggest!!

I was thinking about piecing together a background out of neturals to keep with scrappy look of my grandmothers star. In those days they didn't have whole backs very often, they just used what they had on hand. Hopefully we will get some good suggestions.

Not sure if this will help or not:

You could do either. If you chose to do a full quilt top you can add squares & triangles. The links shows you how.

you could do either one, you could just keep the star as is, turn under the outer edges and applique it down to a background or you could do the piecing of the corners and setting triangles. if your skills (and techniques) are totally different than her's were i would be more apt to go with the first option. appliqueing it down...if you try to finish the piecing you may really have a time trying to get your seams to 'match' her seams, ect.
    but either way will work.

SMALL WORLD... I work in Anniston, AL... here every day. In what part of Anniston did your grandmother live, and how long ago?

And I used to date a guy from Anniston. He drove a 1966 Pontiac GTO that was midnight blue with a white rag top. Our relationship didn't last long, but I still love that car! I will get me one, some day!

Oops! Sorry. Got a little off track. Could you post a pic? I would love to see what it looks like! My Mama is in Huntsville.
