I bought my first car with my babysitting money, it was a 1966 Plymonth Vallent with a 3 in the tree as they called it (3 speed in the column) and it cost me $250. I didn't even know how to drive, my dad drove it home and over the next week taught me how to drive it.

A full size 1980-something chevy truck with a camper shell and the HUGE stick-out-a-foot-and-a-half mirrors you use when you pull a trailer. The first thing I learned was how to back a boat trailer down the boat ramp :-) It got easier from there....
My first car was a 1969 blue AMC Gremlin stick shift (it was the same age I was). I loved that car - I still have the gas cap with the gremlin on it!

not going to date this....but my class of hi school graduates had to have a valid driving license in hand before graduation.........this was a rural small town area, & all the kids drove farm machinery from about the age of 10,& we all needed some safe driving education on smaller things - like cars.

I learned in my first car - a '57 Chev. Very popular car back then. I was 18 and just out of high school. My Dad told me when I turned 16 he wasn't going to teach me to drive cause when I got married, my husband would take me wherever I needed to go. HA! My husband of 40 years wouldn't have taken me anywhere without a huge hissy fit! I dread the day I have to give up my license (I'm going to be 63 in July so hope to have 10-15 years at least).

Actually learned to drive in my parents 1958 ish Desota (anyone remember those?) But when I was a junior in high school, I asked a friend if I could use her 1956 Chevy Impala to learn to drive a stick shift. We were in summer school for extra credit and she was not using the car during break. I drove around the almost empty parking lot until I got comfortable with the gears and shifting. It is a wonder I did not strip her gears...Funny, I met her again at the local JoAnn's and have not seen her since 1963.

I learned how to drive a stick shift in a 1969 Chevy Carry All. It was huge! But now I am so glad that I learned how to drive a stick shift and a large truck. I now drive a Chevy 350 crew cab dually and I love it.
