You don't actually need a foundation to do a string quilt. Either way, I prefer them with a batting, because it makes the quilting much prettier.

When I made my string quilt I quilted the block as I sewed on my strips. I used a thin polyester batting with muslin as the foundation. Plus a backing fabric.

I just stitched my strips together, cut apart into triangles, then stitched into blocks and added sashing and corners. Now I'm hand quilting SID to fleece as batting/backing combo. Really like how it's coming out.

Flannel makes a nice batting, especially with the muslin foundation, and your backing fabric. I think that this would still be a warm quilt, although it would still be light! Enjoy your strings!

Your string quilts are very nice Question--is there a pattern for this?? How do you start?? Mom 6 says she sewed strips together then cut in triangles then what? As you can tell I am no quilter want to learn tho. Also what size are the strips & how big a piece do you make before cutting into triangles. I guess you then sew 4 to make a block--How big is the block?? Boy do I have a lot of ?? Oh and Kathy your quilt is really nice with the dark blue strips going thro all the blocks. Thanks

I have made several string quilts this way and have not put batting in either one, they make nice summer quilts. Mine seemed to be quite heavy when I finished them, but they turned out great, :thumbup:
