When I was little after my dad died, I wanted a Midge doll to go with my Barbie. Mom said we were too broke---got myself one on ebay a few years ago.
But the gift I really wanted was to go see Elvis in concert. I asked every year for Christmas, my birthday, etc. but there was never enought money. When I got married and after a few years, my sweet husband said next time he came in town he would take me----needless to say, Elvis passed away before that ever happened.

I'm replying to the Elvis story - and the exact same thing happened to me - I was living in Omaha at the time, missed his June concert as I was moving at the time and two months later he was gone! How sad I was! I could have spared those few hours from moving to go see him!!

In the 50's I got a chatty Cathy doll from an Aunt and one of my cousins broke her. To this day I still want one, but of course they are expensive.

I guess this was in general- not only for Christmas. I always wanted a sister and I had four brothers. When the two younger were born, and my Dad returned from the hospital and said "no, it is a boy! He gave me a package of Black Jack Gum instead of a sister. I can see it today as clear as it was yesterday. Funny things we remember!! Suz

When I was about 9 or 10 years old, I sooo wanted a nice 22 so I could go hunting with my aunt. But my boy cousin got one and all I got was a stinking doll!! Don't remember what happened to it, never cared, but I hid for the rest of the day and cried. Never mentioned it again to any of the family, no matter who asked.
Never would eat any meat of the critters he got with MY 22 either!! So there!!!

We didn't celebrated Christmas (growing up with no father and only welfare for my Mom & 6 kids) so..... I guess you could say I never received anything I wanted. Which was sad then but as I look back.... I learned that if you don't "expect" things, you're not disappointed when you don't get them.

I know what you mean. Lost my sweet MOM in 1985.

I was blessed to have gotten the things I wanted when I was a kid. When I was 10 or 11 all I wanted were stuffed animals, that year everyone must have bought me one. I remember going to bed Christmas night with all my new animals and there was barely room for me.
