I think it depends on what you like but I think maybe you could try maybe a mauve or green, something not quite so vivid.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like your black has a pattern to it and has a little, very dark pink in it. That ties it all together. I think it is gorgeous and would keep the black... definitely! Beautiful block.
Oh, and the block you put together for your son? not too bad!... but for a whole, totally different look. I think he has a good eye! You would really want to have a bright quilt though.
