I use unbleached muslin for backing most of the time. I hand quilt and muslin is so much easier to work with and I don't have to worry about seams on the back.

I bought white muslin for the backing on my double wedding ring and for the white areas on the front. Have also used the white for a SBS and a teddy bear applique.

I used a white sheet once for backing and hated it. It was too heavy to hand quilt easily.

I do, but top quality muslin. You can definitely see and feel the difference between the best muslin and lower quality muslin.

I should have added to my prior post that the current throw I'm working on is a graduation gift. I need it in a hurry so I am going to try machine quilting. I will use a print so my mistakes won't show. I need to get a walking foot though.

I recently purchased extra wide muslin from JoAnn's Fabric via mail order. I was disappointed to find that it was a polyester blend! I was under the impression that all muslin was 100% cotton!

The disadvantage of muslin is that you always want it to be the underside of the quilt, whereas with other fabrics you may consider the quilt to be reversible.

I usually get the 50 or 60% off fabric in the ConnectingThreads clearance area for backing but I have used good quality muslin. The ct clearance is sometimes cheaper and hides a multitude of sins
