That was an absolutely beautiful insect. If you aren't sure if you are looking at a butterfly or a moth just compare the wings.

Butterflies tend to fold their wings vertically up over their backs. Moths tend to hold their wings in a tent-like fashion that hides the abdomen.

Great pictures! I've had moths like this in my yard at various times and in various towns and cities, I'm amazed each time I see one.

I read a quilting book on nature and quilts- if you look and take pictures of things in nature, the colors are perfect for quilts. When I look at this beautiful butterfly/moth I can see some beautiful colours that go together for a quilt.

Wow, that's beautiful. I'm looking forward to fall (for more reasons than one!) when the monarchs make their annual migration through the mountains in NC. I've never seen that before - have you?

That is a very special kind of moth. I had one a few years ago here in Maine. I can't remember the name of it though.
You should try to find out online what it is. If I can find my old pics I will let you know.
