I don't wash my fabric when bought at a quilt store but I have learned to was garage sale fabric. or should say my husband had to wash it as it was full of cat hair that I was so excited to see fabric that I missed it when I bought. Separate what you want and don't want holding it away from you then wash what you want. It will be worth the trouble.

Depends on the condition, smell and how stored. I usually wash fabric from garage and estate sales, just because I don't know the condtions of the home before the sale. I wash in cold water, line dry in fresh air and then hand fold/press.

I would also wash it coming from a garage sale, auction, or flea market! Then seal it in plastic bags for selling and let one know that it has been washed and dried! The others are right, you never know where that fabric has been or what has been attached to it!

i always wash fabric no matter where it comes from before it goes in my sewing room and if it is from another house i will wash it at the laundry mat before entering it in my house

I would check the fabric for "storage fading and/or musty smell" and then wash. I didn't check some fabric I just bought last week-end. The partial bolts were taped shut with yardage written on them, and the sale was outside with a good breeze blowing. Got home and guess what...
I washed the stuff and my vet is going to have a whole bunch of cage pads, so it wasn't a complete loss.
