okay now I have a question. Do you guys leave the binding stick out from the quilt edge? I am often confused because if you take a 2 1/2 inch binding, sew 1/4 inch on both sides, it will stick out approx. 2 inches (give or take). I have always tried to pull mine snug with the edge of the quilt, which means I have way too much left over.

No. As someone else said, we're talking about 2 different techniques here. I like my binding to be double layers and narrow. So, first I cut my binding strips 2.25" wide, not 2.5". Then I fold it in half lengthwise. This makes my binding 1.25" wide. Then I take the raw edges of the long side of the binding (not the folded edge), align those with the raw edge of the quilt, and sew 1/4" from the edge of the quilt. Then I fold the binding to the back and hand-sew it down.

I'm going to try this on my next quilt.

It's also how I do my bindings. If the cut width is off a tiny bit and you press...you can have a hard time trying to sew down after turning. With out that pressed seam...fudging the biding a tiny bit does not show at all.

This is my new method...i actually enjoyed sewing on a binding!

I posted about that last winter when I did my last quilt, but I'm sure others have posted about it as well. Some quilting instructor had a youtube video and she explained that she didn't press her binding because you need just a little more on one side than the other because of the seam. So, I gave it a try. It went on beautifully. Why do an extra step if you don't have to. That said, if you are doing reversible binding, you still have to press it or it won't come out right.

I also do not iron my binding and I have much better luck with my bindings. It gives the material a chance to follow the natural curve when you fold it over to the other side to be had stitched.

I learned something new again today. Thank you, Ladies. This is a very valuable, yet inexpensive book of knowledge.

I agree with you. After having done it the other way for years I tried this method and am sold.
