    I second the Anita's Arrowhead suggestion.

She went to Joanne's and bought 20 fat quarters - 10 red/black print, 10 solid black. When I opened it, she was so happy for me to see it, and asked me if I could make a quilt out of it. I thought a bit, then told her that yes, I was sure I could, and that I might add in another fabric, thinking of white or even a white/black print, thinking of a Disappearing Nine Patch. OH NO! She wants no other fabric in the quilt. She said she did not care what size it is, but she wants no other fabric included, unless it is more of the exact same. So as I said, NOW what do I do? Sure would love to have your suggestions. And to top it all, it's not the best quality fabric. Grrrrrr!
    You could do one of the Turning Twenty patterns…….they all use 20 Fat Quarters….

    [QUOTE=orangeroom;6474493]D4P, log cabin, potato chips...
    Next time I saw her quilt, she had used a black sharpie marker and blackened out the white symbols! OYE![/QUOTE

    I could not help but laugh.

    As for the DD, make her a quilt with the fabrics she bought and do not add colors. There are a lot of two tone quilts. I just hope it is not like a quilt I made for a cousin. She asked for black and brown. I did add some creme and a tiny red. Once the top was done I showed it and she did not like it as much as a bold bright colorful quilt I made for my son. She even asked for it. I guess she did not like the dark colors after all. I did remind her that she was the one that had requested it. Now I am making her a new quilt with black and bright batiks similar to my DS's quilt.

    Whatever you make, you can add plenty of contrast by using white thread to heavily quilt it, especially on the black fabric. It might just be stunning!

    Maybe there is something wrong with me, but I don't see this as a thoughtful gift for her mom, at all. She bought fabric for a quilt for herself and expects her mom to make it. So... she didn't give her a gift. She gave her a job.

    If their relationship is such that she can ask her mom to do this for her, fine. But I wouldn't disguise it as a gift. That's tacky. The daughter is giving herself the gift!

    How about a disappearing 4 patch? That is often done with only 2 fabrics.

    Oh, I think this is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that.

    I'm sure if you go to the store she went to you will be able to purchase extra.

    Fat quarters at JAF are the lowest quality of fabric. Dina's quilt is darling but the contrast between the red/black print and black solid may be difficult. I have seen D9P done in two colors on this site. Might want to look for it on an advance search. I just finished this charity quilt Square within a Square off center but it had some white prints in the quilt. GOOD LUCK !!!
