What size to make Receiving Blankets?

The blankets that you can purchase in the store are way too small. My family has BIG babies (over 9 pound babies) and I always make the blankets about 45 wide. That way the little ones cannot wiggle themselves out of them. I have given this size as gifts and moms love the bigger blankets.
Once an arm or leg gets out a baby will not keep sleeping---at least our "pork chops" wake up, so the bigger the better.
They like that snuggled feeling---kind of like a burrito.

I always make them 36x36. Just two layers of flannel sewn together with some quilting to keep them together, I have use decorative stitching for the quilting.
All of the rectangle ones I ever used, and I used a lot with six babies, wouldn't stay wrapped around the little one, there was always a foot hanging out. But the square ones are even and most of the time wrapped up the toes stay inside.

I buy 1 1/4 yards of coordinating flannel. I then wash before cutting so I don't have to worry about each piece shrinking at a different rate. I cut them so they are square, round the corners and sew them up. Some times I put a decorative stitch around the edge. They are a little big for a newborn but babies don't stay small for long and 40" square is a good size.

Yes, I do serge the edges of my blankets -- that is one reason I round the corners, the other reason is I can easily crochet around the corners. The serged edge also gives a guildline so I don't get too close to the edge when crocheting. My receiving blankets are only one thickness of fabric.
