I also liked the skateboard quilt that MSQC SENT out this past week. I think it's perfect for that age group. Just my suggestion.

When my son was in high school I did Trip Around The World for him in his favorite color, orange. He's in his late 20s and still loves the quilt. I backed it with flannel. He's a cuddler. I collected orange for about a year as my stash had little. It was a wonderful exercise in color and I was amazed to see it went from near yellow to near red. I can now see the beauty in each color when you look at it in it's full range.

Jenny Doan over at MSQC also has a really neat Arrow Quilt that would be cool for a boy or young man. Just hop on over to Youtube and put in MSQC Arrow Quilt Tutorial and you should find it. Hope you will find just the right one, Leesa.

My son was in to "Dungeons and Dragons" when he was in high school. I had him pick out a batik panel of a dragon and used it as the center. I surrounded it with drunkard's path in the colors that were in the batik panel. He loved it. I also made sure there was a lot of red and black, as those were his favorite colors. Seems a lot of guys like red and black.. (and blue, too) You might take him to the fabric store and let him pick out what he likes.

My problem with making quilts for babies and children is that by the time I get one finished, they've outgrown or moved on to another interest! I'm not a fan of themed quilts anyway, so I tend to make color-controlled scrappy quilts with solid sashing or background. Right now I'm hand quilting a 60 degree triangle baby quilt that is 50 shades of blue solids, the first all-solid quilt I've made. It is throw size so that it can be used for a long time.

The next two boy quilts that I make will have nine-patches in the block designs. I am collecting men's dress shirts on sale day at Goodwill to make the central 9 patches and then order some solids and prints to finish the blocks. IMO shirtings add lots of interest to masculine quilts.
