I took a class at the LQS making a sampler quilt all because I wanted to make a Christmas tree skirt. After that I was hooked. I watched every quilt show that PBS had at that time and picked up a lot of good tips and techniques over time. Also joined a quilt guild where I learned even more and made friends with lots of quilters. It has been an ongoing learning process for 15 years.

I started by sewing my own clothes in high school and when I first married almost 40 years ago bought a sewing machine. What I really enjoyed was embroidery (but only cross stitch) and have done six or seven quilt kits in my lifetime.

I think my first quilt was a Log Cabin, mainly because it was so easy! Then the fabric stash started to grow. I started to think about taking early retirement, how I could supplement my income and bought a long-arm eleven years ago.

Now, after 2 1/2 years of retirement, I very seldom have time to work on my own quilts because my customer base is large enough to keep me busy. (And the stash and UFOs are overwhelming.)

The Rail Fence is an easy beginner quilt. Like others I learned by trial and error-watched Simply Quilts and read books. Am still learning techniques after 20+ years.

Good suggestion, this was also a pattern I used for one of my very first quilts. ;)

Checked out every book in the library system, many 2 or 3 times and read all summer. Started quilting in the fall 6 years ago and haven't stopped since. Also watched all the TV shows I could find.

I took one class in Florida but the rest has been from Eleanor Burns teaching on PBS and trial and error. Fun either way you go but classes can be expensive.

I watched my mom make a quilt with such enthusiasm that I wanted to try it. Her first quilt went together in no time and she had the fever. She was 53 when she made her first one. I didn't start quilting until about 26, ten years later. My first quilt was for my daughter who was five and then her sister when she was 3. I never got to make quilts for my other two children because I was too busy with the four children I had given birth to and the one I was married to at the time. I recently started quilting again and I realized I have missed it.
