You could google Native American beadwork designs. There is a good how-to site with patterns for several designs and figures, but I don't know how to post the link from this silly iPhone. Each bead would represent a block; you would determine the size of your block by the finished size you want your quilt to be.... Or at least that's what I belive would work.

One other option that i didn't see mentioned, is www.fatcatpatterns.com has applique patterns for some Native American motifs that you can purchase. They are probably generic to Native folklore, but I have seen this quilt made up, and it is very pretty. I have the Fatcat pattern as I have both Pawnee and Cyahoga native in my heritage, and my husband has Cherokee in his heritage.

Many hoops looks like a great site for designs . I can see a wonderful quilt in a deep purple batik and a creamy white on white, brown sashing, and the quilt in horizontal rows like wampum bracelets stacked up. Yummy!

Many patterns occurred in multiple tribes, although not necessarily with the same meaning. That checkerboard is one of several the Wintu used to signify "deer scat". What modern quilters know as delectable mountains is "swallowtail" to the Wintu.
